- When you're wearing away the edge more. Better to wear the edge of a standard disc vs wasting it with using an extra thick disc, such as the inside corner of a fillet.

- When you want more contouring on the disc, such as as blending a surface, or removing material on an outside corner.
- When you're aggressively removing material from an edge such as a bevel, or cleaning up a flame cut edge.
